Healthy Eating Tips: Eat Slow to Lose Fast - Further Evidence Slow Eating Promotes Weight Loss

HealthNot to toot my own horn but… Recently, I wrote about the profound connection between taking at least 20 minutes to eat your meals and weight loss.

Today, while riding diligently on the stationary bike at the gym, I came across an article in the May 2007 edition of Oprah magazine entitled “The Wait Loss Program”. This piece is chock full of the most recent evidence that slower eating can equal greater weight loss.

Apparently, scientists at the University of Rhode Island now have PROOF that eating slowly equates with eating less. Researchers found that, when female test subjects stretched their meals to last 30 minutes, they ate about 10% less (or 556 calories versus 631) than counterparts who were instructed to scarf it down. Furthermore, the women who ate slowly reported enjoying their meal more and feeling full for up to an hour after the meal.

The researchers concluded that slowing down could save 150-200 calories a day or as much as 1,400 calories a week! Tremendous!

I found this tidbit especially interesting: Researcher Kathleen Melanson, Ph.D states that in addition to giving the brain time to register fullness, chewing more slowly may actually release a chemical in the brain that sends a signal of satiety or fullness.

Here’s the healthy eating tip offered by U of Rhode Island researchers on how to slow it down: “Take your time, chew slowly and thoroughly and put your fork down between bites.”

See! Health Sundae is SO cutting edge! Man, I’m good!

So remember: Slow down, trim down!

Love you,
Health Sundae
