SUPER WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENT: SLIM DOWN BY FILLING UP WITH PSYLLIUM

“I’m Hungry!” is a common outrage when we are trying to lose weight. If you feel hungry, you feel deprived, and that is a warning sign that a feeding frenzy is imminent.

One of the best ways to keep hunger at bay is to include 35 grams of fiber in your daily diet. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are excellent sources of dietary fiber, which can help keep your tummy feeling full without adding lots of calories to your diet.

But there exists another, natural source of fiber proven to aid weightloss that you probably haven’t heard much about.

Ta Da! Let me introduce you to the greatness of psyllium husk powder.

What Is Psyllium?

Psyllium fiber is a bulking agent derived from the Plantago plant whose seeds are composed of 19% fiber, 18.8% protein, and a variety of other carbohydrates, amino acids and flavonoids. Because just one tablespoon psyllium has as much fiber as a bowl of bran cereal, psyllium is an excellent source of natural fiber and natural appetite suppressant.

How To Include Psyllium Powder In Your Slimdown Diet Plan

Since psyllium seeds are odorless and almost tasteless, a bit of psyllium powder is a perfect way to bulk up a smoothie or top cereal or yogurt. You can even add it to baked goods like breads or muffins.

Additional Health Benefits Of Psyllium

Psyllium has been shown to do much more than aid in weight loss. It can help with many conditions including:

- Heart Disease

- Atherosclerosis

- Diabetes

- High Triglycerides

- Irritable Bowel Syndrome

- Obesity

- Constipation

- Diverticulosis

- High Cholesterol

- Psoriasis

- Hemorrhoids

How Much Psyllium Should I Take?

Recommended Dosage For Weight Loss: 1-3 tablespoons a day.

Remember: Whenever you add fiber to your diet, introduce it slowly so you can avoid mad dashes to the loo. Try a tablespoon a day for a week and then gradually increase if desired.

Be Aware!

It is a good idea to talk with your physician if you are planning to use psyllium for more than a few weeks without taking a break.

Do not take psyllium within 1-2 hours of taking medication since it can delay the absorption into the bloodstream.

Psyllium can make tetracycline antibiotics less effective.

Store psyllium away from moisture

Psyllium is not recommended for children

Don’t go beyond the recommended dosage, excessive amounts of psyllium can interfere with your body’s absorption of certain minerals

Possible Side Effects

Gas! This is why I remind you to start slowly and gradually increase if necessary.

Drink plenty of fluid when using psyllium. There is a risk of esophageal swelling if you aren’t taking in lots of fluid. If you already have difficulty swallowing psyllium is not recommended.

Where Do I Find Psyllium Husk Powder?

Natural Groceries and health food stores

Good old Trader Joes

Capsules Or Powder?

Both are effective ways to boost fiber intake. Note: most capsule forms recommend that they be taken with water about 30 minutes before a meal. For me, putting a tablespoon in a smoothie or on oatmeal works best, that way I don’t have to remember to do another “something” while I am rushing around trying to get breakfast ready. Plus, I like the thickness that the psyllium adds. Mmmm, that’s one thick chocolate protein shake!

No One Likes To Talk About Poop

As Dr. Mehmet Oz always reminds us – healthy poop is important!

Psyllium is an excellent supplement that’s been relegated to the “secret supplements department” because it involves the issue of poop!

But Dr. Oz recommends psyllium as a weightloss tool and for general colon health as well. And, if Dr. Oz tells me to put some psyllium in my smoothie, you better believe I’m gonna do it. Big poop rocks!

Get Your Poop On!

[…] SmartBrans’ all-organic ingredients include wheat bran, oat finer, oat bran and psyllium. (Check out my Psyllium post –this stuff is KEY to shedding and maintaining weight loss). My only mini- gripe is the evaporated cane juice (aka sugar) in SmartBran. Rarely do I eat or recommend products with more than 5g of added sugar. But SmartBran (with 6g of sugar per serving) still passes my “neurotic consumer” test based on its whopping and wonderful fiber content. […]

would you add this to a protein shake? Like one based on whey protein, mixed with milk?

Precisely! Just toss in your blender along with protein powder, milk and some frozen fruit - voila- a perfect meal! You can also try it in oatmeal.

Okay…just bought a new product at my spa Acquadora (in Arcadia) where I did my first Colon Hydrotherapy (which is a whole other story!) I bought this combo fiber/wheatgrass product. Here is the URL for the product: http://www.ins-usa.net/us/index.html

It’s called INS Fibre Bio Wheatgrass - I’m going to be using it once in the morning and once in the evening. But I will do the shake thing in the morning.
