Oprah Tips for Healthy Pet Diet

Oprah Tips for Healthy Pet Diet

Health

A recent Oprah episode was dedicated to discussing all things “Dog”. Oprah really surprised me with her forward thinking regarding Doggie Diet.

Oprah described her dog’s diet (as advised by her veterinarian) as being a mixture of ground beef, lamb or chicken, brown rice and a small amount of vegetables like potatoes or a few chopped carrots.

Oprah’s vet actually recommended slowly introducing and then switching your pooch to raw meat since it is offers the most nutrient dense form of protein. With a grimace and a hint of a shudder, Oprah said she’s, “not quite there yet”. No matter, if their gleaming coats and sparkling eyes are any indication, Opie’s dogs are already thriving.

I was extra jazzed to hear that “The Great One” feeds her beloved dogs a whole foods diet since I have been feeding my own girl Bella a diet of salmon (canned Wild Alaskan), chicken, brown rice and a bit of broccoli for about the past 8 months.

Now, being a pug, it isn’t easy staying svelte. In fact, left to her own devices The Belle would consume everything in sight.

I mean, I often find the old girl munching rocks from the garden. If she were human, I would definitely diagnose Bella as a compulsive overeater.

In any case, this all-natural, whole foods diet is WORKING! Even my vet commented on the fantastic condition Bella has achieved and I am stopped regularly by passerby who ask, “aren’t pugs supposed to be fat?” and, “that is the buffest pug I have ever seen!” Well, the fact is, no matter the breed, no dog is healthy when it is overweight.

Another plus is Bella ADORES her meals. I mean the reaction I get when it’s suppertime is priceless. So joyous is she when she sees din-din coming out of the fridge that she often jumps into her water dish (hand-painted and signed by the artist, of course).

SO, if it’s good enough for Oprah’s beloved babies, and Bella is thriving, I think this plan is a keeper. Talk to your vet about portions and what is best for your specific pet. The rest is easy. Trust me – Prince does not expect you to be Wolfgang Puck. On the weekend, just cook up some chicken, lean beef or lamb, steam a big pot of brown rice, mix, and stick it in a Tupperware to dole out at feeding time.

Vegeterian? I understand that if you don’t eat meat, you may be uncomfortable feeding it to your dog. If this is the case, talk to your vet about alternative natural protein sources for your pooch and combine these with other whole foods such as brown rice and veggies like potato, a small bit of carrot or gently steamed broccoli.

Now Fido can dine like a King and you’ll have the joy of watching him thrive!

Mange Fido!
