IT’S EASY GETTING GREEN
“Young Greens” a relatively unknown group of foods, ranks high on my BFF Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s Top Ten Super-Foods list. Unfortunately, this powerhouse group rarely finds its way into the typical American diet. Like, I haven’t seen any ads for a Taco Bell Young Greens & Beans Burrito lately.
What makes ingestion of this group even trickier is that you may think you have it covered by eating broccoli or a spinach salad. While young greens are close relatives of leafy, green vegetables, they actually include more nutrient dense items like Blue Green Algae (BGA), Spirulina, Chorella, Barley Grass and Broccoli Sprout.
Spirulina and Chorella are strong antioxidants, research shows they prevent cancer, inhibit tumor growth, eliminate toxins, and diminish allergies. Spirulina and Chorella are also rich in essential fatty acids like Omega 6, which is often lacking in the Western diet.
Spirulina also contains Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA), which the body cannot produce on its own and thus must “outsource” (another outside source being the Borage oil I told you about). GLA is of importance to us glamour girls since it helps the body absorb and convert the healthy fat you eat (not the Ben & Jerry’s babe, I mean the olive oil), to give you beautiful hair and skin.
Ideally, we could all just jam in to our local juice bar every day for a shot of organic greens. Personally, the taste of green-shots leaves me a little queasy. But taste aside, getting to the juice bar every day is simply not practical for all of us Especially when it is between the Nordstrom’s ½ yearly sale and Juice Junction.
So, I offer you one of the easy, tasty ways I have found to incorporate young green super-foods into my day. Biochem Sports 100% Whey and Greens is a delicious powder that combines highly concentrated, ultra/micro filtered whey protein (contains no lactose) with a variety of high quality, organic greens like Sun Chorella, Broccoli Sprout, Sea Buckthorn, Alfalfa Leaf Juice Powder, Barley Leaf Powder, and Hawaiian Spirulina (this type of spirulina is grown from one of the world’s most nutrient-rich sources ).
A serving of Biochem Whey and Greens is 2 heaping scoops (“heaping” always bodes well when it comes to portions, right?) with 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 2g carbs and 20 g whey protein isolate.
This all-natural powder comes in Chocolate and Vanilla, perfect for making a low calorie, low fat protein shake. Get creative-try adding soymilk, fruit, ground flaxseed, peanut butter, and blending with ice for a delicious meal replacement.
Or, add a couple of scoops to your morning oatmeal, top with slivered almonds or a scoop of peanut butter for a yummy, quick breakfast that strikes a great balance of, slow-burning carbs, protein and healthy fat.
If you travel or like a portable post-workout protein hit, try Biochem’s “on the go” individual servings. These are a plastic shaker to which you just add water or milk.
Another option for those on-the move is Biochem Sport Greens & Whey Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Bar, which offers chewy, chocolatey convenience.
As many of you know, finding a great tasting, all-natural, protein shake or bar is not easy. Usually, you end up sacrificing taste for nutrition or vice versa. But take it from me, the health nut who also happens to have exquisite taste in all things that sparkle, Biochem Sport Whey and Greens is a gem.
Xoxo,
